What is The Fale?

The traditional building of Samoa, the fale is at once the most simple and complex of interiors. Simplified the fale could be described as a raised platform covered by a roof. In fact the fale is a much more finely considered interior. Lashed and woven togther it is a beautiful porous space. Various in scale it may be the space of the family or of the village. It is a room that may be used for both domestic and ceremonial purposes. Open to the elements the fale is both a private and public space. It is the space in which things, people, objects and ideas, are assembled and collected, but are not hidden or closed away from view.

This fale blog is just that, a space in which material, work and discussion, generated by the interior design students and staff can be contained, in order that it may be readily accessed, on view and available to all.
