DESN 6202IN Second Year Drawing: Model Making Project

EXERCISE ONE : MAKING MAQUETTES

‘You may decide to make a doll’s house because you remember the one you had as a child; because you have fond memories of granny’s old home; because you want to design the home of your dreams; or because you have an urge to create. Whatever reason, working with miniatures will stretch your imagination and tax your ingenuity’

Armstrong, Beryl 1993 Design and Build your own Doll’s House, The Apple Press, London. Pg 6.

Models are used throughout the design process from initial sketch models, through to presentation models. In fact modelling offers one of the quickest and most powerful ways for a designer to question and experiment with built form and three-dimensional possibilities.

One common misconception of interior design is that it begins with a thumbnail sketch, which is then developed through sections, plans, elevations, perspectives etc. and finally displayed in model as a ‘realistic’ interior. In truth, there are as many design methodologies and processes as there are designers.

This exercise introduces the model as the key design tool, not only for presentation, but also used throughout all of the design process.

Using materials assemble, fabricate or construct 3D compositions, that contain architectonic content.

This is an exercise in 3 dimensional composition rather than representational modelling and demands that you are able to make design decisions based on aesthetic and structural concerns, without the necessary obligation of building.

Consider using the following

1: Four thin light, flat, planar materials:
Wood : balsa, or veneer
Transperant material : mylar, perspex
Cardboard : different weights
Paper : tracing paper, butter paper, etc

2: Two thin, linear rigid elements. (Different from each other) For example brass, steel, copper tube, balsa wood, timber strips. Do not use match sticks or pipe cleaners.

3: Connectors. Glue, eg tacky glue, super jet , UHU, masking tape (do not use hot glue gun)

FINAL REQUIREMENT: 10, 3D marquettes
HAND-IN : 12 MARCH
