INTRODUCTION TO INTERIOR ARCHITECHTURE PRINCIPLES
PROJECT 2:
SCANNING THE ARCHITECTURAL LANDSCAPE
ESSAY HAND IN: 31 May
SEMINAR PRESENTATION: 06-07 June
INTRODUCTION:
This assignment focuses on some key players in architecture both past and present. It helps map the historical evolution of architecture by asking who influenced these leaders in western architecture, and who they subsequently went on to influence. You are required to answer these questions in relation to a listed topic (see research topics below).
Your work will be communicated in two parts:
1. A seminar in which you will present your findings.
2. A timeline and essay that document your findings
1.TIMELINE:
Draw a timeline that maps the work of your specific architect. This will require self directed reading and research. Hand-in your timeline with your essay.
2. RESEARCH (working in pairs):
Working in pairs research the work of your architect in relation to ONE of the topics listed below.
- Lighting
- Proportion
- Cultural Identity
- Materials and methods
- Colour and detailing
Research Considerations:
- Focus on works by your architect that relate to your chosen topic.
- Research these works and your architects design intentions.
- Investigate how your architect has been influenced by the historical and cultural timeframe in which they were working.
- Look at the influence their works have had on their contemporaries and subsequent generations.
3. SEMINAR (working in pairs):
In pairs present your findings to the class in a seminar discussion. Your seminar must:
- Be engaging and entertaining; use props, be creative in your thinking.
- Support your discussion with visual data eg. PowerPoint presentation, slides, diagrams, video
- Clearly communicate your ideas.
- Encourage group discussion. You may want to pre-prepare questions for your audience.
Structure your seminar: [Below is a suggested format only]
Introduction:
Begin by introducing your topic of discussion.
- Give a brief synopsis of what you intend to talk about.
- Give some background information about your architect based on your timeline and other information you have collected.
Middle:
- The ‘guts’ of your seminar should discuss your chosen topic in relation to your architects work.
- Discuss significant influences on your architect (e.g in relation to their use of colour and detailing), and whom your architect has gone on to influence.
Conclusion:
Tie together all the threads of your discussion in a brief summary. Draw conclusions from your discussion.
ESSAY: (individual work)
Individually present your seminar discussion in an essay format. Your seminar should provide you with all the information you need to write the essay.
Hand-in your timeline with your essay.
