SECOND YEAR STUDIO: ASSIGNMENT 3

Unitec School of Design: Lotte Wotherspoon: May 2006
INT 5201: SECOND YEAR STUDIO

FLESH, FASHION AND FANTASY

DURATION 4 WEEKS. CRITIQUE: MONDAY 11 JUNE :

Seduce, Entice, Shock, Make heads turn, Stop them in their tracks!!!

You have been asked by your client (a prominent fashion designer) to come up with a unique design solution for displaying an item/ object /accessory. Your client wants you to step outside the confines of conventional retail design, to produce a display that captivates their buyers, AND encapsulates the design ideas, inspiration and creativity of their work.

PART ONE.

Exploratory research must form the basis of your conceptual ideas and will later inform your choice of materials and overall design strategy.

Either:
Investigate notions of the body and fashion in relation to identity, commodity and/or display.

Or:
Choose an artist or fashion designer whose work interests you. Investigate the design methodologies, principles, and conceptual ideas underpinning their work.

You must have a solid theoretical basis to your final design. You will achieve this through theoretical readings and visual research. Present to the class at least one article that you have read and explain how it, has informed your ideas. Collect visual data by ransacking magazines and books, etc. for images of installation art, fashion, sculpture, lighting, furniture design…

Produce:

- One type written page supported by visual research summarising your findings.
- One written article (photocopied) that you have found and read in
relation to your research.

Class discussion of research findings: Monday 21 May

PART TWO.

Choose an item/ object /accessory

Brainstorm the meanings and uses that are associated with this object.

Choose two key materials.

A) One of these materials must be a conventional building material, while the other must be a non-conventional material.

B) At least one of these materials must relate directly or indirectly to your object.

Play with your materials. Manipulate your materials . Investigate your materials.

Imagine that you are working with your fashion designer, ask yourself how they might work with the materials you have chosen. Think creatively, remain experimental, get inside the mind of your fashion designer. Ask yourself:

- How would they combine these materials?

- How would they transform these materials?

- How would they change the way we think about these materials?

- How would they work with these materials while exploring the meanings associated with their item/object/accessory?

Class discussion of investigations: Monday 28 May
