Dear students,
welcome back! There will be a number of exciting events happening during Orientation week. We look forward to seeing you all and introducing our new staff. Please have a good look at the timetable for Orientation below. It is critical that you attend classes all day on Wednesday 27th February as we are introducing the new studio briefs, new staff, and have excellent speakers lined up to kick off the year with a bang!

Guest Speaker: Clare Barone
Clare Barone is a mixed media artist whose work explores transience, and vulnerability through installation. Clare uses natural materials to tempt the viewer to touch and explore not only with their eyes but there sense of smell. Clare has completed a Post-Graduate diploma in Fine Arts at ELAM and has just finished her Masters Degree in Art And Design at AUT. Her Thesis was on Alienation theory and it's relationship to Contemporary Arte Povera practice. Her work has been shown in New York, Westport Connecticut, Key West Florida, San Francisco, and New Zealand. her most recent theater credit is the set design for PlayRight 07 in Aucklands Herald Theatre. Clare looks forward to further projects that can exist in both the Gallery and the Theater encouraging discussion and collaboration.

Guest speaker: Pedro Ilgenfritz
Pedro is a Brazilian born actor, theatre director, playwright and researcher of the popular forms of drama such as street theatre and clowning. He started his studies in the early 1990's under the tutelage of the Brazilian theatre director Geraldo Cunha. From 1992-1999 he was a member of Grupo de Pesquisa Teatral Atormenta. In 2000 he migrated to New Zealand and since then has been running workshops and directing productions where the focus is on actor's training and improvisation. Pedro is interested in political satire and the investigation of the basic principles of the creative process.

Guest Speaker:Dr Andrew Barrie
Andrew Barrie is a New Zealand-born architect and architectural critic formerly based in Tokyo. After completing doctoral studies in Japan, Andrew spent several years working in the office of Toyo Ito, one of Japan's most innovative and influential architects. He writes on Japanese architecture for international architecture magazines, and has also published two books on the subject. Andrew's own design work has won numerous awards in both NZ and Japan, and has been exhibited in both countries.

FREE AFTERNOON CONCERT AND ACTIVITIES
"Sounds in the Sun" is a free afternoon concert for students, staff and their families and the local community.Staff and students* are exempted from classes on Thursday 28 February (from 12.30 pm onwards) for the purpose of attending the Sounds in the Sun festival - this has been approved by Academic Board and Senior Executive.
