Student Forum - the gossip from your rep Jonathan!

Student Forum Meeting update November '07

• Next year's 1st year will be the last 1st year for the Bachelor of Design programme
• Product design will merge back with B.Design. New electives will be available for both departments.
• In the next few years to come, the School of Design will improve the learning facilities for the studio environment. Aiming for a more plasant atmosphere.
• Christchurch Polytech Insitute of Technology. Their Interior Design Department in MT. Eden is shutting down next year. 40 or so of their students will be joining the B.Design Interior students next year starting from January. They have a large tech library which will be coming as well.
• School of Design is looking into the possibility of becoming an official Apple training centre. When completed, SoD will be able to run certificate and tests for Final Cut Pro and other softwares.
• This year's Grad Show will have give-aways, including DVDs of the exhibition and badges etc. instead of just a printed publication. The intention of the DVD is free people from the limitation of a book.
• Looking into the possibility to have an off campus exhibition space, hopefully in a more crowded area in city. Currently considering the Aotea Square Redevelopment Project, where a hybrid of a shop and cafe could be the space where students exhibits their work.
• Possibility of summer courses/electives.

Construction Hand in

I've put a box outside my door in case you're project is too fat to fit under the door.

Monday

Jacqui's tutorials & hand-in.

DRAWING 3rd year
I will be running additional drawing tutorials this week: Tuesday 1-3 (in my office)*.

As mentioned in class last week you need to pin-up your final drawings from both semester 2 briefs on the wall with your studio work. For most of you this will be one final drawing for 'every drawing is an object' and a series of monoprints. ( this is the group of prints designed to work together - ie not just your experiments from class - come see me on Tuesday if you're unsure). Your archive for each brief should be on the table.
Your final drawings must be accompanied by a concise conceptual statement explaining the ideas you were exploring through the drawings. You presentation of your work must be well considered.

CONSTRUCTION
I will also be running more construction tutorials on Thursday 1-3 (in my office)*.
Please hand-in your assignment by sliding it under my door by 9.30am Monday 12th Nov. Write your name on the whiteboard once you've handed it in.
You can hand it in early if you wish - on Thursday during tutorial time.

*Please sign up on the white-board next to my door. Please fill the earliest times first.
In both courses there are a number of you I haven't seen individually in the last couple of weeks. I expect you to sign up.

Thursday

Week 14 Second and third year

Hi all,

hopefully you have all enjoyed the two workshops over the last four weeks. Here is what is happening next week, an opportunity to review and reflect on your work from this year. There is also some information on important dates coming up. Lets make this last week of studio really useful and productive for everyone and then relax! Just one final reminder, the admin team have asked me to remind you that enrollments for 2008 are open online and classes are filling up fast!

Cheers,
Kathy

12 October – 24 November 2007
Gallery One: Vernon Brown: From the Architecture Archive

In the middle of the twentieth century, maverick personalities prevailed at Auckland University’s School of Architecture. Dominating teaching there for twenty-two years was a tall Liverpudlian with abundant energy, a caustic turn of phrase, and an enthusiasm for all things characteristic of his adopted country – Vernon Brown. Often credited with inventing a vernacular style of building based on the bach, he took a firm stand against buildings that spoke with foreign accents, advocating preservation of the familiar kiwi twang.

Wood was the way to go, he reckoned; flexible and cheap to build with, and easy to treat with natural preservatives to withstand the wet and warm climate of Auckland. His characteristic “Brown box” approach to domestic architecture was rectangular in shape with a mono-pitched roof and weatherboards stained black with Stockholm tar. This inaugurated the distinctive black-and-white colour scheme which would become Vernon Brown’s hallmark and earn his buildings the description of looking like coconuts with a bite taken out. Throughout the 35 years of his life in architecture, a glamorous exterior remained less important to Vernon Brown than a design that could re-create the fun and informality of a summer holidays on Waiheke. His houses epitomised the egalitarian ethos of New Zealand as a classless society, and as an architect he became the preferred option for Auckland’s cultural elite. To survey Vernon Brown's contribution to New Zealand architecture, this exhibition includes models built by current students from the School of Architecture and Planning, and photographs and plans from the Architecture Archive.

Saturday 13 October, 1pm Architecture tour: Vernon Brown in the Eastern Suburbs

Exhibition curators Jonathan Gibb and Linda Tyler discuss the work of Vernon Brown.

3rd Year Drawing meet in the Interior seminar space

1pm
Please bring pen & paper to take notes.
Print out the brief too.... below.

Monday

THIRD YEAR DRAWING BRIEF 4 'lucky last'

1 monoprints
From week 10 – 13 you will be introduced to simple monoprint and simple ‘etching’ techniques and explore how these processes introduce new dimensions to spatial drawings.

Traditionally Interior instrumental drawings are crafted with line and rendered with tone. Use of line privileges edges, junctions, structure. Line has been developed and extended to include coded information particular to Interior and Architecture… these include the ‘cut’ (plan & section), construction information, codes for materials and other symbols.

Monoprints are almost the opposite of instrumental drawing. Their inky smudginess defies clear edges or line. The image is created through subtraction: removal of ink; removal of darkness; absense. Space is thus rendered in a shadowy fluidity of darkness and light.
Each image captures the immediacy, chance and ‘luck’ of a ‘one-off’ print created in one sitting.

2 printing-making space-making
While exploring these print making techniques carefully consider the way this media effects the spaces you are communicating:
What spatial qualities does monoprinting bring to your drawings?
How can these spatial qualities and the printing technique transform the space itself? (lend materiality, texture, form/ formlessness).
How does monoprinting challenge conventional representation of space?

3 process

Choose your most interesting or successful drawing from the previous ‘Every drawing is an object’ brief.
Extend this drawing through a series of exploratory monoprints. Investigating the following spatial issues:
atmosphere, light & dark, shadow, materiality, inhabitation.
Explore and experiment with the printmaking process.
This may include: materials/papers to print onto; multiple prints on one image; using found materials and textures in the printing process; printing onto drawings, watercolours, prints; use of other hand media; alternative materials for printing plates….
Exploratory prints will be compiled into an archive.

Develop and select a final series of prints. Consider how these work as a set. What does each image communicate and how do these contribute an overall understanding of your space?

In this brief you will:
• generate a broad series of exploratory prints to be complied in an archive.
• experiment with monoprinting techniques and their possibilities for generating new ideas of space.
• critically engage with and analyse the spatial possibilities of your prints/drawings.
• assemble a final series of prints that communicates your space. This series will be carefully considered in terms of: composition (for individual drawings & the series), white space & tonal balance, size, scale, proportion, paper (or other surfaces).

HAND IN
• Final hand-in and assessment of the years work:
Monday 12 November 9.30am.

ASSESSMENT CRITERIA FOR 7302IN Drawing:

drawing media & process skills 33.3%
