Week 14 Second and third year
hopefully you have all enjoyed the two workshops over the last four weeks. Here is what is happening next week, an opportunity to review and reflect on your work from this year. There is also some information on important dates coming up. Lets make this last week of studio really useful and productive for everyone and then relax! Just one final reminder, the admin team have asked me to remind you that enrollments for 2008 are open online and classes are filling up fast!
Cheers,
Kathy
Monday 5 November:

3rd year students
10:15 meet in room 1159 (the fridge) for a presentation by the Hot House, which is a collaborative design studio that you may want to take part in next year. This is a chance to find out about Hot House projects so that you have time over the summer to consider if this is for you! After that we will start individual tutorials.(See schedule Kathy's office door).
All students
Some time on Monday (not when the HH presentation is on), you should all load your animation into the folder on the desktop of the computer in room 1159. Directions for this are below. This is so that we can have a screening on Tuesday (and so that we can include your animation in your assessment).
Tuesday 6 November:
2nd year students
carry on with organising your studio and drawing work for presentation.
3rd year students
Individual tutorials with Kathy and Lotte continue (see schedule Kathy's office door)
All students
Animation screening! 12:30 in the fridge! Come and see the work of all your mates!
Thursday 8 November:
All students
Kathy and Lotte both available for individual tutorials, sign up sheets will be on our office doors.
Monday 12 November:
All students
Make sure all your work for drawing and studio is ready in your studio spaces by 9:30am for assessment.
Tuesday 20 November:
1:00pm - 7:00pm All students remove work and personal items from studio spaces, drawers and lockers. It is really important that you do this as all furniture will be moved from these spaces from early the next morning for the grad show. If you cannot get in at this time make sure you ask someone else to take your work away for you.
Instructions for handing in your animation work:
A folder called ‘INTERIOR DESIGN ANIMATIONS’ will be set up on the desktop of the Computer in Rm 1159. (PASSWORD TO LOG-ON : "design")
Could all students copy their published animation file to this folder. Please only copy your published QuickTime movie, do not put your working files in this folder.
IMPORTANT NOTE: Render them as Quicktimes using the Soreson Video 3 codec.
Please name the file with your name and year group (e.g. JONATHAN, THIRD YEAR). All animations should also have your name in the tile or credits of the movie.
It is very important that you copy your published movie to this folder as it will be partly assessed during the screening next week.
If you have any trouble publishing your work Jill has kindly offered to help you via email: : jill.wills@gmail.com

Spring Drinks!

Hi all,
lets all have a drink together on Monday 8 October (the first day back) at 5pm to celebrate being in the last quarter of our school year. We have all been working really hard and it would be nice to start the last part of the year and celebrate spring with some fun and frivolity.
We can get together in the courtyard by the cafe. I will get the BBQ going and cook dinner if you all bring a few liquid refreshments!
In the meantime wishing you all a good, productive and safe break. On that note check out this link Jonathan sent us all on how to be a "Sustainable Student", it has a some great tips! http://www.inhabitat.com/2007/09/08/living-sustainably-as-a-design-student/
Cheers, Kathy

Crits Monday 20 August
Hello, we have our FOODPACE crits on Monday. These will take place in two groups, one being in the fridge (room 1159) and the other in the interior seminar room (next to second year). The crits will commence at 10.00 sharp. We are giving you 9:30-10:00 to pin up and get equipment ready so that we don't have any issues with people moving around and being distracting while the crits are underway. On Monday morning there will be a crit schedule up outside my office so that you can see which space you are in and when you are having your crit. If you haven't already please let me know if you require any equipment for your crit - this will help me to determine which room you should be in. I have booked data projectors for the crit so no need to arrange these yourself.
We will be introducing the second part of the Foodspace project on Tuesday morning in studio.
Looking forward to seeing you all on Monday,
Kathy

Architecture Lectures Thursday at Lunchtime

We have a fantastic line-up of seminars for next term 3 and we know you won't want to miss any of them! They are as follows and further details (including locations) can be obtained from http://architecture.unitec.ac.nz
Thurs 26th July 2007, 12.30-1.30pm
Dr Rodney Wilson, Noel Lane and Chris Mackenzie will be presenting "Afternoon at the Museum: The architectural re-vamping of Auckland War Memorial Museum".
Please note this seminar will be held in the new auditorium of the museum. Details on how to find it are given on our website (click on link above). The auditorium seats 196, which is lucky as this seminar in which the Museum Director, Project Architect and Project Engineer will discuss the project, is bound to be popular. This is a first for the seminar series, holding a site-specific seminar and we're really excited about it.
Thurs 9th August 2007, 12.30-1.30pm
Cesar Wagner will be presenting a seminar entitled "Responsive Landscape: The work of Roberto Burle Marx".
Who better to discuss the impressive work of the well known landscape architect Roberto Burle Marx, than a native Brazilian. Cesar lectures in architecture at Unitec and is comfortable making the crossover into the garden genre. This is a must for all those who enjoy colour and luxuriant plants, artfully designed and combined into magical landscapes.
Thurs 23rd August 2007, 12.30-1.30pm
Gavin Lister, director of Isthmus Group, Landscape Architects will present a seminar based on his recent Urban Design Masters studies, called "Urban Neighbourhoods".
Gavin's seminar will focus on the ideal position of landscape architects to lead urban design and bring together design and broad scale planning. This is a significant role for the profession and an important seminar for all those with an interest in urban design.
All seminars are free and open to the public. We look forward to welcoming you to any or all of these seminars. Venue locations are given on the website.
4th year self-directed project
just a gentle reminder that the first draft of your brief for your self-directed project is due next Monday 25 June. Please either print a copy and slide under my office door or send it to me via email. If you are "floundering" in your search for a topic consider drawing a project out of the research that you undertook for your 7440 theory paper.
Kind regards and happy holidays,
Kathy

The Book Place studio (3+4 years)
We were very fortunate to have such great critics today, so thanks to Anet Kuhla and Bill McKay for joining us and being so generous with their attention and comments. (Those of you who chose not to attend these crits very much missed out!) Those who were there for the whole session saw the value in actively participating in a crit. I very much appreciated the sustained attention of the 4th year group that I was with.
Here are some very general comments that may apply to many of you, especially in terms of thinking about communicating your projects in effective and thoughtful ways.
- Remember to communicate the site, this helps to locate the project and its context. So, show the roads, the connection to the rest of the building, the school across the road etc
- Many of the plans and sections were very abstract. Remember that all drawings can show material and atmospheric qualities such as light etc. Alternately, you might use colour in plans as a symbolic element, using colour as a code to identify key aspects.
- Also, use notation, writing, a key or a legend to help orientate viewers in your drawings.
- We tend to read left to right. Use this fact to structure the presentation of your project.
- Use thickness and weight of line appropriately in drawings. For example, concrete should read as thicker and heavier than glass! Using variations of line weight also makes for a punchier and more interesting drawing.
- Read the "communication" assessment criteria!
- Remember that the library is also a workspace, consider how the workers are accommodated in your design.
- Have you forgotten about signage and lighting?
- Are you effectively communicating the experience of being in the space?
- Do your sections reveal a lack of consideration as to what is above?
- Where are services (cabling, air con etc) accommodated?
- Have you forgotten to address interior linings, that is, what do the interior walls look like?
- What is it like to look out of this building?
- What is the experience of looking into this building?
- Is it important to communicate aspects of TIME in your particular project?
Good luck!
Kathy
