5007 Interior Construction Technolgy Guest visiting

Dear students,

Next week Thursday 3rd of April (in Interior Construction Technology class), Mark Graham will give us a short talk about environmental materials in furniture/interior design and the re-appropriation of a commercial product. Mark had 3D design study in the UK and studied Masters in Furniture design and technology. He now is the Manager of Matisse Divisional Sales. I believe that you will enjoy his presentation.

See you next week in class (1pm sharp).

Ingrid

Construction Hand in

I've put a box outside my door in case you're project is too fat to fit under the door.

Monday

Jacqui's tutorials & hand-in.

DRAWING 3rd year
I will be running additional drawing tutorials this week: Tuesday 1-3 (in my office)*.

As mentioned in class last week you need to pin-up your final drawings from both semester 2 briefs on the wall with your studio work. For most of you this will be one final drawing for 'every drawing is an object' and a series of monoprints. ( this is the group of prints designed to work together - ie not just your experiments from class - come see me on Tuesday if you're unsure). Your archive for each brief should be on the table.
Your final drawings must be accompanied by a concise conceptual statement explaining the ideas you were exploring through the drawings. You presentation of your work must be well considered.

CONSTRUCTION
I will also be running more construction tutorials on Thursday 1-3 (in my office)*.
Please hand-in your assignment by sliding it under my door by 9.30am Monday 12th Nov. Write your name on the whiteboard once you've handed it in.
You can hand it in early if you wish - on Thursday during tutorial time.

*Please sign up on the white-board next to my door. Please fill the earliest times first.
In both courses there are a number of you I haven't seen individually in the last couple of weeks. I expect you to sign up.

Wednesday

Interior Construction

Hi Students,
For our final class this week we will be going to Laserstream to learn about lasercutting & watercutting.
We will start at 2pm sharp. Please be punctual.

Address: 709 Rosebank Rd, Avondale, Auckland.
For map click this link.

I will run assignment tutorials before and after the site visit. Please sign up on the whiteboard by my office. Please make use of these tutorials effectively - I am not available outside of these times. Come prepared with questions as there is only enough time for 10min per person.

Tuesday

Interior Construction Site Visit.

Hi Everyone.
As you know we will be going on a site visit this week to a house under construction, followed by one on one assignment tutorials.
Guy Tarrant, Architect, will meet us on site at 1.30pm (be there early).
The address is 49 Franklin Road, Ponsonby. See the map.
Please wear covered shoes.
Bring pencils & paper as we will be doing drawings on site. You will need to share measuring tapes so we can check sizes of things. Bring your glossary so you can check your timber frame terminology for your drawings.
See you there.

I have put up tutorial times on the whiteboard outside my room.

PRODUCT PRESENTATION AFTERNOON Interior Construction Technology

Thurs 11th October

I have organised an afternoon of product presentations from Architectural Reps from a range of companies. This is an excellent opportunity to experience the type of product presentations common in design offices. The diverse range of companies includes: Plytech (ply specialists), Custom Carpets, Swinson Wallpaper, PSP (extensive range of plastics), and 3M with exciting innovative print and projection technology.

The first speaker will kick of at 1pm sharp.
I would like full attendance and appreciate you all to being early.

Each speaker will be followed by question time so please think of questions that support your assignment or your general construction knowledge as a practitioner.

Interior Construction SITE VISITS

Hi Everyone,
Sorry about the delay but I've been having trouble uploading to the blog.
We will be going on site visits tomorrow (thursday 20th):

1pm start at:
Hafele (Furniture & Architectural Hardware Fittings)

2.30 or 3pm
Simon James
www.sjdesign.co.nz
Site 3 3o St Benedicts Street.

afterwards - drinks
at Benediction or Galbraiths

Both site visits should be useful for your assignment. Think in particular about any hardware issues you need to resolve for your design and make the most of looking around the Hafele showroom and asking questions.

Please carpool as parking can be a bit tricky in the city. I will leave Unitec at 12.40 if anyone would like a ride. Please email me today (Wednesday).

Thursday

6007 INTERIOR CONSTRUCTION TECHNOLOGY

Hi Students,
I am unwell today so I'm unable to come in for class this afternoon.

I suggest you use this time constructively (excuse the pun) and work on your assignment.
My suggestion is:
1) Get started by doing hand sketches of details where elements come together. Identify on the sketches materials, fixings and fittings that need to be resolved.
2) Secondly do a list of options for your materials, fixings and fittings ... it will help to look at magazines in the library to see what materials other designers use. Try to have at least 3 options for each thing. Once you have a list of options think about the pros & cons of each material.
3) It may help to make a list of requirements for the design which you can use as criteria for making future decisions. This may include things like 'lightweight', 'child-safe', 'transportable', 'durable', 'transparent', 'sustainable', 'zero-waste', 'suitable for mass production', 'handcrafted', 'flexible', 'cheap'.... think of your own requirements.

Remember to put all of this thinking & research directly into your journal. We will have time to review this work next week.

If any of you were absent last week please photocopy the assignment from a classmate. If you are unsure which design to details please decide with your classmates.

Please pass this message on...
Thank you & see you next week.
Jacqui

SEMINARS 5007 Interior Construction Technology

Hi Everyone,
Our seminar series commences this Thursday 13 May and will run for 3 weeks.
All students are required to be present and prepared to present each day. Speaker order will be drawn on the day. A role will be taken. You are required to bring your glossary to take notes from each seminar.
A few hints and tips: 1. Make sure your seminar is only 15min. 2. Keep it interesting with discussion of inspiring projects which use your material. 3. Consider the balance between images and text. 4. Think about interactivity - samples are great. 5. Provide explanations of terminology that might be unfamiliar to your classmates.

Before you save your Powerpoint file please choose to 'compress images' to make the file size as small as possible. See this tutorial for tips. Save to memory stick or CD to play on my laptop.
See you on Thursday.

DESN 6007 Interior Construction Technology 2

Hi,
this course runs in semester two and it follows on from the semester one course Interior Construction Technology One. So far only 10 students are enrolled in the second semester course. If you intend to do this course (and I highly recommend it in terms of the knowledge required for interior design) you should go and see Jessica Smith in the School of Design office and get your enrollment sorted out. Currently the school can only run a course with 12 or more students, if you don't go along and enroll the course may have to be cancelled due to lack of numbers. If this affects you please attend to it urgently.

If there is some reason why your are having any trouble enrolling (such as a timetable clash) please let me know.

Many thanks,
Kathy
